About me

  • My experience

As a child, if I wasn’t drawing or “doodling” as my father would say, I would be making clothes for my dolls out of scraps and using my first sewing machine, a red Capri!

Roll onto the age of 16 - 21, I trained as a dressmaker at a local shop called “Nimble Thimbles” with the fabulous Gilly and Dorothy.

I then went to college to study fashion, which was fabulous, but my heart wasn’t fulfilled. I came home and worked in the sewing department ay Johnstons of Elgin.

Roll onto 2007 when I decided to learn kilt making. Boom! Hooked on kilt number one!

I obtained my SVQ in kilt making and later taught this at a local school for 5 years, before starting Paula Duncan Bespoke Kilt Making in 2017.

I absolutely love teaching and sharing my expert knowledge of this fascinating Scottish heritage craft. I totally believe I was put on this earth to make and teach kilt making!

  • Hobbies

This is my dog Arthur, who is my other passion.

I love taking him to our local beach to chase balls, run up the sandy dunes and paddle in the North Sea!

He’s a nutty gentleman, who will always spring through to the work room with his lanky legs leaping everywhere, to greet you!

You may even see the odd photo of Arthur posing in some tartan! He has to earn his keep!

I also love to indulge in creating kilts for myself and experimenting with new fabrics and designs, which includes some fun leatherwork, taught to me by the fabulous Jen from Sporran Nation. The best sporran maker ever!

Athur’s collar was made on one of my leather hobbie weekends! There’s something really special about handmade. It’s sharing energy with the tutor, maker and the wearer.

  • Living in Scotland

I am situated on the beautiful Moray Coast , between Aberdeen and Inverness. This coast is a little gem with beautiful beaches and lots of whisky distilleries including Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. There are many sea towns scattered along the coast line, which are rich in history and character.

The other amazing sight you may see, if you’re lucky, are the Northern lights which magically dance around in my back garden!

There are many castles, grand estates and ruins to investigate , with Culloden not too far away and of course the famous Loch Ness Monster to find!
